The main legal document of the Sultanate of Oman is called the Basic Law1, 1996. On the article 12 of the document, dedicated to Social Principles, environmental protection and prevention of pollution is regarded as the State’s responsibility.
“Article 12 Social Principles (…) The State cares for public health and for the prevention and treatment of diseases and epidemics. It endeavours to provide health care for every citizen and to encourage the establishment of private hospitals, clinics and other medical institutions under State supervision and in accordance with the rules laid down by Law. It also works to conserve and protect the environment and prevent pollution.”
Oman adopted in 1985 a Law on Environmental protection and pollution fight (only in Arabic), which, according to the FAO Legal Office’s website, has as objectives: environmental protection and pollution fight; protection of natural resources; environment impact assessment of agricultural, industrial and housing projects; protection of water, air, soil, fish resources, animals and plants.
